Four opponent powers

Four opponent powers

Part of an ongoing series of teachings based on Shantideva’s classic text, “Bodhisattvacharyavatara”, often translated as “Engaging in the Bodhisattva’s Deeds.” Venerable Thubten Chodron also refers to the outline of the commentary by Gyaltsab Dharma Rinchen and the commentary by the Abbot Dragpa Gyaltsen.

  • Four opponent powers:
    • Differentiating guilt from regret
    • Kinds of remedial actions
    • Making a determination not to repeat the action
    • Relying on the basis: changing our attitude and repairing the relationship
  • Negative actions and breaking the precepts
  • Purifying negativities done in this and previous lives, negativities we concealed or rejoiced in
  • Confessing heavy negativity created with regard to Three Jewels and other fields of merit
  • Spiritual and psychological benefits of purification
