The Alternative of fortitude

04 Working with Anger

Part of a series of talks based on Working with Anger given at Sravasti Abbey’s monthly Sharing the Dharma Day starting in April, 2025. Written by Venerable Thubten Chodron the book presents a variety of Buddhist methods for subduing anger, not by changing what is happening, but by working with our minds to frame situations differently.

  • Guided meditation on the disadvantages of anger
  • Fortitude rather than patience
  • Expressing or suppressing does not eliminate anger
  • Differentiating mental attitudes and external actions
  • The advantages of fortitude
    • Calmness gives us the space to make wise decisions
    • Benefits our health
    • Allows us to be free of grudges and resentment
    • Has a positive affect on those around us
  • How an inmate used the Dharma to remain calm
  • Questions and answers
