The Buddhist group at a Singapore prison invited Venerable Chodron to give a Dharma talk, which she did happily.
Venerable Chodron with Andy and Ken at South Central Correctional Center in Licking, Missouri. Andy and Ken began the Buddhist group at SCCC. Venerable was very happy to meet them – and vice-versa – as they corresponded regularly.
While some may abandon compassion and dissociate themselves from a person who has harmed others, I will not do this.
It is very moving to hear the incarcerated express hope and enthusiasm.
Al graduated from college while in prison! They did the graduation ceremony in the prison. What a happy occasion!
Venerable Chodron emphasizes the practical application of Buddha’s teachings in our daily lives and is especially skilled at explaining them in ways easily understood and practiced by Westerners. She is well known for her warm, humorous, and lucid teachings. She was ordained as a Buddhist nun in 1977 by Kyabje Ling Rinpoche in Dharamsala, India, and in 1986 she received bhikshuni (full) ordination in Taiwan. Read her full bio.
