  • Wisdom in Difficult Times
A public talk with Venerable Thubten Chodron

    Friday April 13, 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm

A society’s quality depends – among other things – on the quality of people in positions of power. This was the case in the time of the Buddha, and it still is. What qualities are important to cultivate in our positions as leaders, managers, teachers, politicians, doctors, and parents?

Through the advice that the famous Indian philosopher Nagarjuna gave to his king and patron, Thubten Chödron will show how this ancient wisdom is still relevant and important in these modern times.

  • Spiritual Wisdom for Everyday Life
A weekend retreat with Venerable Thubten Chodron

    Saturday April 14 10:00 am – 5:00 pm
    Sunday April 15 10:00 am – 12:00 pm

At the core of the Buddhist philosophy is the concept of ‘emptiness’, the understanding that nothing exists in and of itself. The famous Indian philosopher Nagarjuna (ca. 200 CE) investigated the happiness and suffering in his time, and came to this liberating insight. But how can this view help us now to be happier in everyday life, and to live with less fear?

This weekend, Thubten Chödron will help us explore what makes us experience something as pleasant or unpleasant, how feelings of happiness and fear arise and turn into their opposites, and whether what we call ‘happiness’ is lasting. Her clear and accessible way of teaching will help us discover – through explanation, as well as through meditation – how an insight into the deeper nature of existence can open our minds.

The teachings will be based on the book Practical Ethics and Profound Emptiness, which Thubten Chödron wrote based on Khensur Jampa Tegchog’s teachings on Nagarjuna’s text Garland of Advice to a King.

Chodron shares from Approaching the Buddhist Path, her latest book co-written with His Holiness the Dalai Lama, showing the continued validity of ancient Buddhist methods of mind training that are deep timeless truths.

  • Good Karma: How to Create the Causes of Happiness and Avoid Suffering
A book launch with Venerable Thubten Chodron

    April 25, 2018
    7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Why do things happen the way they do in our lives? How do we create the causes for a happy life? The Buddhist practice of mind training gives us the answer to these questions: it involves overcoming our self-centered attitude and replacing it with an attitude that cherishes others. This, in turn, leads us to act in ways that naturally lead away from suffering and toward happiness—in short, to create good karma. Venerable Chodron offers a commentary on one of the great Tibetan Buddhist poems, The Wheel of Sharp Weapons, which shows, clearly and practically, how to eliminate the causes of anxiety, fear, and depression and to create the causes of joyful liberation for oneself and all others.

  • Working in the World with Wisdom and Compassion
A residential retreat with Venerable Thubten Chodron

Retreat dates: Thursday April 26, 6:00 pm – Sunday April 29, 2:00 pm

The world we now live in is very different from the world at the Buddha’s time, yet we human beings have the same afflictions and still experience physical and mental suffering. How do we apply the Buddha’s ancient teachings of wisdom and compassion to our modern lives, so that we can become 21st century Buddhists? In this retreat, Venerable Chodron will speak to our current situation in the world through teachings from Approaching the Buddhist Path, the first book in The Library of Wisdom and Compassion, a multi-volume series of His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s definitive teachings on the Buddhist path especially compiled for Westerners.

  • Approaching the Buddhist Path
A public talk with Venerable Thubten Chodron

    May 7, 2018
    7:30 pm

Traditional presentations of the path to awakening in Tibetan Buddhism assume the audience already has faith in the Buddha and believes in rebirth and karma. However, His Holiness the Dalai Lama realized early on that Western students need a different approach. Venerable Thubten Chodron shares His Holiness’ wisdom from Approaching the Buddhist Path, the first volume in a multi-volume collection of the Dalai Lama’s definitive teachings on the path that she is coauthoring with him. Starting from the universal human wish for happiness and the dynamic nature of the mind, they provide a framework for the modern student to make sense of this rich tradition.
